A Future Based on BioLPG

With up to 90% reduction in carbon emissions, BioLPG represents a cleaner energy future for c. 800,000 off-grid homes in Ireland, as well as the thousands of businesses that are reliant on alternative fuel sources — including hotels, restaurants, B&B’s, agri-food businesses, farms, rural manufacturing and industrial processing.

Liquid Gas Ireland is committed to supporting the Government’s ambitious goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050. While LPG is already a lower carbon energy source, the industry is proactively taking emissions reduction even further with the introduction of BioLPG, also known as biopropane.

BioLPG is a certified renewable fuel delivering up to 90% carbon emission savings compared to conventional fossil fuels such as oil. BioLPG carries the same low air and particulate pollutant emissions (NOx, SOx and PM) as conventional LPG, importantly contributing to local air quality.

Already available and in use in Ireland today, BioLPG is chemically indistinct from LPG and can be ‘dropped-in’ to existing LPG boilers and appliances, an easy switch for consumers to make.

It can also be blended with LPG which enables a phased, secure transition to 100% BioLPG. This sets it apart from other renewable solutions, which cannot be blended with their conventional counterparts and require new infrastructure investment.

Because BioLPG is certified as renewable by the EU and Irish Government, it’s exempt from carbon tax, meaning it’s a great investment for the future.

Benefits of BioLPG

  • Renewable: Made from a diverse mix of renewable feedstocks such as sustainably sourced vegetable oils, wastes and residues.

  • Sustainable: BioLPG and its feedstocks are supplied under approved EU Commission voluntary sustainability schemes and is fully traceable as a renewable fuel.

  • Certified Low Carbon: EU Certified to deliver a minimum 50% and up to 90% carbon emissions savings.

  • Clean: Carries the same low air and particulate pollutant emissions (NOx, SOx and PM) as LPG.

  • Drop-in Fuel: As BioLPG is a ‘drop-in’ fuel, LPG infrastructure is already prepared for the future so no new equipment is required.

  • Technology Compatible: Like LPG, it is also a perfect fuel for most modern low carbon heating appliances such as gas heat pumps, hybrid installations and fuel-cell micro-CHPs.
